
High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year (9-12)
Award Eligibility:
A member of KAHPERD (has been an active member for at least three years prior to nomination and membership remains active throughout the award process - continues for the year as an award recipient)
Has taught for a minimum of five years within the high school physical education profession
Is currently practicing as evidenced by:
- Degree/certification in teaching
- Full-time teaching contract (current or at the time of nomination)
- Minimum of 50% of total job responsibility teaching high school physical education
Award Criteria:
- High: Criteria #1: Conducts a comprehensive and diverse physical education program that utilizes the Essential Components of Physical Education as reflected in the SHAPE America National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education and other best practices.
- Supporting Guidelines: In an environment that creates a sense of belonging, the applicant demonstrates how they prepare students for a lifetime of physically active habits. Teacher adheres to the guidelines outlined in the three guiding documents, including implementing a standards-based curriculum, and clearly articulates the ways in which this is accomplished in an intentionally inclusive environment.
- High: Criteria #2: Utilizes various teaching methodologies and practices indicated within agreed upon professional standards.
- Supporting Guidelines: Demonstrates a commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment, that honors students of all skill and ability. Curriculum and assessments follow the National Standards guidelines and utilize the most current practices. Applicant conveys how their teaching methods have evolved to meet the needs of each student as a result of personal growth, professional development and where applicable, advocacy.
- High: Criteria #3: Engages in culturally responsive instructional practices.
- Supporting Guidelines: Applicant demonstrates the ability to create culturally responsive lessons which promote and encourages inclusion, supports emotional development and opens the door to creating lasting student teacher relationships.
- High: Criteria #4: Describe your utilization of student assessment, one of the essential components of physical education, that reflects inclusion and social justice in your educational setting.
- Supporting Guidelines: Pre-assessments are used to determine students’ prior knowledge and help guide future instruction. Applicant uses formative assessments that are appropriate to their student population to guide instruction and monitor the progress of student learning. Applicant uses summative assessment to measure attainment of curricular goals and determine gaps within learning. Assessments are inclusive of all learners' abilities so that students are able to demonstrate what they know in a fair and equitable way.
- High: Criteria #5: Advocates for and supports the profession, as evidenced through partnerships, participation in professional organizations and professional learning opportunities, free or otherwise.
- Supporting Guidelines: Applicant provides descriptions and evidence of, but not limited to, service to the school or local community and professional organizations, drafting or contributing to publications, facilitating presentations, or acquiring funding for programs and services. The applicant may provide other pieces of evidence that demonstrate they advocate or support the profession not listed here.
Award Recipient Responsibilities:
Award recipients will be responsible for presenting at the following year’s KAHPERD conference and submitting an article for the KAHPERD journal/newsletter.
KAHPERD award recipients may be required to become a member of SHAPE America before candidacy for a Central District/SHAPE America award is considered (based on SHAPE America Central District protocol).
